arts and crafts home
A modest 1920's house set on an elevated plot with a large garden. The property was in need of improvements and enlargement to offer the client the space they needed, to make the most of the garden and to be more efficient in its use of natural resources.

Having worked closely with the client since 2019 on the design and construction of this project, hmad|architects completed work on this project in Spring 2022.

The client wished to have a 'hands on approach'. hmad|architects provided architectural services to help the client secure planning permission and select the right builder to collaborate with, in order to find the best way to carry out the construction works.

The project included two large extensions to create more space for the owners family. The client's brief was for the extensions to 'fit in, and compliment the existing building'.
The design has helped to unify the house with the extensions that are in keeping with the 'arts and crafts' look and feel of this home, which also make the most of the large garden.

Sustainability concerns were also a key part of the brief. hmad|architects used their software 'EcoStar Designer' to help the client understand the predicted 'energy in use' of the house. From this understanding they looked at ways to reduce the energy consumption including a Passivhaus fabric first approach.
